TANZANIA, UK TO EXPLORE BILATERAL CLIMATE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY COOPERATION

Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Amb. Mahmood Thabit Kombo, met with UK Minister for Climate Hon. Katie White OBE (MP) at Whitehall in London and discussed opportunities for strengthened bilateral cooperation on climate action, renewable energy, and conservation.

During the meeting held on September 10,2025 Minister Kombo highlighted Tanzania’s commitment to clean cooking, renewable energy, forestry, and marine conservation and shared achievements such as the distribution of 300,000 clean cookstoves reducing firewood use by 48% and construction of Tanzania’s largely hydropower-based energy system, which has a surplus capacity of 4,000 MW compared to 1,900 MW demand.

Minister Kombo emphasized that Tanzania is ready to lead regionally in renewable energy, forestry, and clean cooking while seeking equitable and sustainable partnerships.

On her side Minister Hon. Katie White reaffirmed UK  commitment to support Tanzania’s climate and energy priorities, signaling a strengthened collaboration between the two nations.

She expressed strong support for Tanzania’s initiatives and proposed deeper engagement through technical assistance, financing mechanisms, and coordinated participation in global climate platforms such as COP30 and the United Nations General Assembly.

At the end of the meeting, both sides identified potential areas for collaboration including technical and financial support for clean cooking, forestry initiatives, sustainable timber and furniture production, waste management and recycling, energy grid improvements, and participation in carbon markets.
